Every college student has gone through a stressful time in their career. Whether with classes, clubs, sports, boys, girls, or all of the above. It can become overwhelming and you can feel as though you cannot deal with the amount of stress you that are under. It is not good to allow yourself to become overwhelmed. College students are more likely to commit suicide due to stress than any other demographic of individuals. Men between the ages of 20-24 are twice as likely to commit suicide than young women between the ages of 17-19. Here are some ways that you can manage your stress while making sure you get that degree.
1.) Exercise and Eating Healthy
I know this sounds very cliche, but studies show that exercise has an affect on our stress levels. When you exercise your brain, it releases endorphins which make you happy. Exercising has always been a good way to relieve frustration. If a teacher gave you a bad grade on a test you missed because you were in the hospital, take it out on a punching bag.
Your roommate will not take out the trash and leaves the room smelling like old socks, then do a couple of sets on the leg press. You will feel better after you take out all of your negative feelings on the workout equipment.
2.) Pursue your Passions
When you pursue your interests, whether they are artistic or a social issue that you feel needs to be stopped ( i.e. domestic violence or sex trafficking) will help you focus on something that you actually want to do instead of stressing over a term paper.
Whether you like to do photography, videography, draw, sing, write songs, or be an advocate, DO IT! Who knows, maybe it could turn into a way for you to make money while in school.
3.) Hang out with your friends and family
Hanging out with your friends will take your mind off of all of the things that will cause you to stress and to not be productive. Take some time out of the day to get together with your closest friends and family, as well to do something fun together.
Generally, if you do this, they will not only take your mind off of what is stressing you out but will motivate you to take on any task like a champ. Also if you do this, you will feel rejuvenated and ready to take on any task.
4.) Take some time for YOURSELF
It is good that you spend time with your friends and family, but you also need time to be alone. Being alone gives you time to do some soul searching and allows you to get to know yourself so that you can take on whatever the world has to throw at you.
It also gives you the opportunity to pursue your interest in case you are self conscious about them and do not want anyone to know, which is perfectly fine.
5.) DO NOT STRESS!!!
I know it is hard to not stress and this is coming from a fellow college student. However, if you allow certain things to take over your life, you will not reach the level you are striving for. You need to learn to let go and let things take their natural course.
Everything will work out for the best and you will see the results you want as long as you do your best work and live your best life. Stressing over every little thing is not a healthy habit pto possess. It can be very detrimental to your health in the long run and you will not live to see old age.
It is always good to have some tools that help your live a healthier life whether you use them or not. It is always great to prepare for the best and the worst. Be sure to apply all of these methods to your daily schedule and you will become a more productive, happy, positive individual.
